NHS registration, GP, Immigration Health Surcharge
Summary
The UK has the National Health Service (NHS) — a public healthcare system that is largely free at the point of use. As an immigrant, you pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) of GBP 1,035 per year as part of your visa application, after which you're entitled to the same NHS care as British citizens. The NHS is excellent for emergency care and serious conditions, but struggles with long waiting times for non-emergency care. Many expats therefore take out additional private health insurance.
